FICTION IN A FLASH CHALLENGE 2021. WEEK #39. #IARTG #FlashFiction #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts @pursoot

This week’s challenge brought out thoughts about memories and birthdays. I thought about my years on this earth, riding through it like a ferris wheel. And, I though Of people who have rode my ferris wheel of life briefly or for a long time. There are those who taught me lessons, some caused me to fear, with others I shared laughter, or joined in love.

Here is the photo prompt for this week.

Courtesy of Amanda Cottrell
LIFE IS LIKE A FERRIS WHEEL
AGE
IS JUST
A SIMPLE NUMBER
THAT EACH YEAR INCREASES
NO MATTER WHAT I DO
THE SKIN THINS AND WRINKLES APPEAR
BUT THE LIGHTS OF MY BEING GLOW
MAKING MY LIFE LIKE THE TURNING FERRIS WHEEL
EACH DAY SPINNING INTO THE NEXT ONE
ONLY STOPPING TO SAY HELLO, FAREWELL
 TO PEOPLE JOINING OR LEAVING
 MY WHEEL OF LIFE
FOR EIGHTY YEARS,
WHAT A
RIDE!

I chose this design for my poem for two reasons: I wanted it to start at one word, go to eight words and then back to one. Our first birthday is “one”. Then each sentence represents ten years…to 80…and then back to one…reflecting back on my 80 years in ten year increments. The first half is about coming to the age of 80 and my physical and spiritual changes. The second half reflecting on those who have been a part of my life.

Here is my Tanka poem based on the photo prompt.

Cherishing each day is an important part of my life. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I made a conscious decision to live each moment with love as best as I could. There is a wonderful song by Jason Mraz titled “Living in the Moment,” which describes my philosophy so beautifully. Here it is for you to enjoy!

Thank you, Suzanne Burke for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this weeks Fiction in a Flash challenge.

And here is my Tanka poem based on the above:

There is a wonderful poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, titled “The Sands of Time.” It is a poem that left a large impact on me when I was in high school. Its influence is obviously still with me.

Thank you for visiting my blog today. I welcome your comments.

2021: HOPE, HEALTH, & HAPPINESS

Hope is wanting something to happen, an expectation. If we use it in a prayerful, spiritual way it is more empowering. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said we must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope it was a deep and well-intended prayer.

It is HEALTH that is real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver. (Mahatma Gandhi). Health is a state of being free from physical or mental illness or injury. There is a definite relationship between one’s sense of well-being and his/her’s physical and mental health.

Your health is what you make of it. Everything you do and think either adds to the vitality, energy and spirit you possess or takes away from it. (Ann Wigmore) We are what we think.

Happiness is a state of contentment or satisfaction; it is something we do, are grateful for, or fulfills a wish or desire. We will have true happiness when we enjoy the journey of one’s life rather than the destination.

Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. (Joseph Addison)

As we celebrate the New Year instead of making the typical resolutions (lose weight, exercise more, get a new job, etc.), let’s deeply and truly look at how we live. How do we use and live the words hope, health, and happiness?

We can make 2021 and the world better by following the words of this quote: He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope has everything. (Thomas Carlyle)

FICTION IN A FLASH CHALLENGE #23 @pursoot #Writing Community #IARTG #ASMSG

My thanks to Suzanne Burke for this week’s fiction in a flash challenge. The photo prompt is beautiful and from it I was inspired to write the following Tanka poem.

I'm falling, falling
My fears hold me back from life
I'm trying, trying
To overcome and be free.

I'm praying, praying
Til fears are gone and I'm free
While angels guide me
To a life free from falling.

Like a waterfall
I now bring joy and beauty
To those who see me
Living life fully with love.

When you look at the photo prompt, what thoughts, emotions come to you? Does my poem speak to you in any special way? Have you experienced times of feeling lost and afraid? I welcome your comments.

FICTION IN A FLASH #20 #IARTG #ASMG #Writing Community @pursoot

Award-winning author, Suzanne Burke, has presented a photo prompt for which everyone is invited to write a short story, poem, or one-liner. Join the fun and time of creativity.

This week’s photo prompt brought several ideas to mind, but I chose a poem in Tanka form. This is a Japanese style that consists of 31 syllables, divided in 5-7-5-7-7 format.

THE EMPTY SADDLE

THE BREAKING OF DAWN
OF YELLOW, GOLD, AND PURPLE
PAINTED BY GOD’S HANDS
SYMBOLIZED NEW BEGINNINGS
AFTER A STORMY, SAD NIGHT.

THE EMPTY SADDLE
WHERE SHE ONCE RODE HER HORSE, BABE
WITH ME BY HER SIDE
IS NOW SLOWLY LED HOMEWARD
WITHOUT THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.

I STAYED BY HER SIDE
I HELD HER COOL AND FRAIL HAND,
I KISSED HER SWEET LIPS
THEN SAID GOODBYE TO MY LOVE
ALWAYS TO LIFE IN MY HEART.

WITH EACH NEW SUNRISE
I GAZE UPWARD, SIGH, AND PRAY
FOR STRENGTH AND COURAGE
TO LIVE EACH DAY WITHOUT HER
‘TIL MY SADDLE IS EMPTY.

I invite you to go to Suzanne Burke’s website, learn about this amazing woman, become a follower of her blog, and buy one or more of her books. I highly recommend each and every one of them. https://sooozburkeauthor.wordpress.com/

FICTION IN A FLASH CHALLENGE ’ Week #15 NEW Image Prompt. #IARTG #ASMSG @pursoot #WritingCommunity

This week’s photo prompt brought many different emotions and story ideas. I was inspired to write another Tanka poem.

                                             A SHATTERED LIFE
                                              My life before you
                                  Was in shambles and lonely
                                           But now it's healthy
                                Because your love and goodness
Give me strength, joy, and courage.

“FICTION IN A FLASH CHALLENGE #11”

Welcome to today’s blog. Once again I am sharing a short story or a flash fiction based on a photo prompt. Author, Suzanne Burke offers these challenges and everyone is welcome to participate. https://sooozburkeauthor.wordpress.com/

Based on the photo prompt below, I have written this Haiku poem. I have often thought about the journey each droplet of water takes to create our oceans, lakes, rivers, rain, and waterfalls.

Are we not each like a water droplet, sometimes a single drop that often is joined by others to form a family, community, or nation? Do we not depend on each other and yet act alone? Like water, we might become stormy and angry causing destruction or hurt. Or we are the calming presence for someone in a time of trouble.

Some waterdrops form ice crystals and become sleet or hail. Fog is the condensation of water molecules that hang in the air. Mist is a cluster of tiny droplets suspended in the atmosphere. (Courtesy of National Geographic)

Some people are crusty and hard, often hurting people with words or actions (hail). Foggy people do not reveal their true selves and it is difficult to have a relationship with them. There are those of us who are shy and withdrawn and as the mist, they are difficult to see or communicate with.

A waterfall is one of the most beautiful ways the accumulation of water droplets is displayed. They are powerful whether high or short. When we humans gather together for a common purpose, we are also powerful no matter the size of our group. We are as beautiful as any waterfall when our purpose is one of love.

FICTION IN A FLASH CHALLENGE #8

Award-winning author, Suzanne Burke offers another opportunity for fun and creativity. Everyone is welcome to enter this challenge. For details go to her website https://sooozburkeauthor.wordpress.com/.

I love all cats no matter their size or breed. The majestic lion is certainly at the top of my list. When 13-year-old, Cecil, was killed in 2015 on a hunting expedition, I was deeply saddened. Most lions in the wild live to an average of 15-years and those in captivity to as much as 30-years.

This photo prompt inspired me to write the following Haiku poem.
